4.94 per cent fall this year in placement of 17 IITs

There has been 4.94 per cent decline in placements of 17 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), informed Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javdekar in Parliament. Due to the decline in placements more students are turning towards entrepreneurship and startups.

Javdekar informed, in 2014-2015 there were 72.82 per cent placements in 17 IITs while in 2015-2016 it rose to 75.79 and then in 2016-2017 it fell to 70.85 per cent.

Replying to a written question raised in Rajya Sabha he said, there are many reasons for the rise and fall in the campus placements in IITs like the present situation in market, preference for higher studies, students interest in entrepreneurship and startups.

There has been rise in job offers from foreign countries compared to last year. Last year there were 65 offers from USA, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan but this year IIT Mumbai received 74 offers from foreign countries. He also informed that for the first time before the placement season began the IITs have given permission to the public sector companies for campus visit.
